Experience of a lifetime for para surfer

The sea was rough during, but that did not stop participants from giving in their all.

The 2025 SA Para Surfing Championships at New Pier was simply a wonderful experience for mid-South Coast local Sue Martin.

The local participant said that the recent event was one for the books, and she couldn’t believe she had the opportunity to be a part of it. The event brought together over 48 surfers from across the country to compete in various divisions, showcasing the growing talent and inclusivity within South Africa’s para surfing community.

“It was amazing, despite the lack of practise sessions due to KZN’s wet weather conditions,” said Sue.

“I had to pinch myself that I was competing for South Africa. Those were surreal moments for sure.”

One of her highlights of this event was obtaining a 7 out of 10 score.

“I know exactly which wave it was and I play it over and over in my head,” she added.

The sea was rough during, but that did not stop participants from giving in their all.

Sue had no challenges per se because it was a learning curve, and she now has a base to work on for next year’s champs.

“I am so grateful to Made for More (NPO) for being able to participate.”

Sue’s classification was ‘all-inclusive’ as she hadn’t competed in SA Para champs before, and managed to get to the quarter-finals. She ended up surfing in three heats.

The winner in this category was Edwil Windvogel. In second place was Camden Harwood, with Joseph Lecourt De Billot in third.

Bongani Xulu, the event’s head judge, said that it was great to see the all-inclusive division growing because it shows that organisations’ are working hard to grow the sport and share the stoke.

“All surfers did their best and took advantage of the beautiful conditions on the final day. Congratulations to all the champions,” said Xulu.
