Thrills and spills at Tweni tennis champs

It has been an extremely well supported tournament.

It’s officially tennis championships season, with the French Open under way and Wimbledon around the corner.

Closer to home, things are getting interesting in the Umtentweni Tennis Club champs.

Some absolute blockbuster matches have been played, many going the distance in enthralling, exhausting and nerve-wracking fashion.

There have been injuries and withdrawals, as is often the case. Women’s number one player Liesl Smith has had to withdraw from the singles due to an ankle injury, but may still play the mixed doubles with Raj Naganna.

Double trouble with Darral Pillay, Trevor Pillay, Chris Polinski and Neil Thomas.

Men’s singles: Defending champion Hriday Kambaran beat Johan van Nierkerk 6-3, 6-3 to book his spot in the final against either Bjorn Wikstrom or Darral Pillay. Plate – Trevor Pillay will play Raj Naganna.

Ladies singles: Cheryse Wikstrom triumphed in a ding-dong battle against past champion Chantelle Donald. She will play Robyn Olivant who had a walkover due to Liesl Smith’s withdrawal.

Men’s doubles: This is still in the semi-final stage where Pillay brothers Darral and Trevor play Colin Barker and Justin Hinchliff. In the other semi, Ian Ackerman and Johan van Nierkerk play Dan Dimitriu and Rob van der Schyff.
Plate – Mark Hannaway/Naren Sunker play Chris Polinski/Neil Thomas. Raj Naganna/Herman Ehlers await the winner of the match between Chris Connellan/Andre Hofman and Foxy Norton/Morgan Reddy.

Justin Hinchliff (left) and Naren Sunker step it up. Well, Naren does.

Ladies doubles: The women are playing a round-robin and there still a few rounds to go.

Mixed doubles: Darral Pillay/Sharon van der Schyff play Justin Hinchliff/Chantelle Donald. Johan van Niekerk/Dee Algie play the winners of Bjorn Wikstrom/Cheryse Wikstrom and Raj Naganna/Liesl Smith. Plate: Andre Hofman/Natasha Cotterell play Trevor Pillay/Robyn Olivant.

Bjorn and Cheryse Wikstrom have added youth and smiles to the champs.
