Scottburgh athlete excels in performance cheer

Lisakanya Mthembu earned her colours in Hip Hop and Pom Dance at the Provincial Colour Trials.

Lisakanya Mthembu has made local history as one of the first athletes in KwaZulu-Natal to be awarded Provincial Colours for Performance Cheer through the KwaZulu-Natal Majorette and Cheerleading Association.

Mthembu, a Grade 3 learner at Scottburgh Primary, earned her colours after competing in both the Hip Hop and Pom Dance divisions at the Provincial Colour Trials held at Forest View Primary School in Kloof on December 7.

She excelled in both categories, securing her position among the province’s rising stars, also as one of only four athletes to secure colours.

Her journey in the sport began last year when she joined Mid South Coast Crew, a Majorette and Performance Cheer team serving Scottburgh and the surrounding area. Despite her young age and short time in the sport, Mthembu has already built an impressive record of achievements.

In 2024, she earned two gold medals at the KZN finals and received the team’s prestigious Crew Member of the Year Award.

Her success continued in 2025, where she claimed three bronze medals and another gold at the KZN finals. She once again walked away with the Crew Member of the Year title and has been named team captain for the 2026 season.

Looking ahead, Mthembu will be eligible to trial for her SAMCA National Colours in 2026, paving the way to represent Performance Cheer at official provincial and national events.

A special mention goes to Calisra Jooste (aka Coach Jade), who assisted as a counsellor during the trials. This role allowed her to showcase her recently acquired KZN Colours while motivating and teaching all the athletes who participated.

Liezel Jooste (aka Coach Wiezy), head coach of the Mid South Coast Crew team, KZNMCA vice-chairperson, and acting cheerleading representative for the province, also served as one of the judges on the day, helping to ensure a fair and inspiring selection process.

Mthembu’s coaches and supporters have praised her dedication, calling her achievements an inspiration to young athletes across the region.

She is a standout young athlete to watch, both in her team and across the province.
