Cuatro tennis serves up the goods

The annual tournament involved members from the local Ugu clubs is up and running.

The 2026 Cuatro tennis tournament got going recently, despite some rain, withdrawals, and some near airport drama for convenor Sharon van der Schyff and husband Rob.

They got back from the Netherlands late, flying via Dubai. They flew out 20 minutes before all the flights were grounded due to the bombings.

Back home and on the tennis courts, mixed doubles dominated proceedings, with six games scheduled.

Match of the day was between Lomon Rautenbach and Renee Purtell, who overcame Frank Hall and Cornelia Steenkamp in a three-set thriller, fighting back after losing the first set.

There was also a close game between Brendan Els and Katie Weller who saw off Philip Schaffler and Jenny Senneck in two tight sets.

Other than that, most of the games were one-sided, but that will change as the tournament progresses.
