Siblings crowned golf champions at Port Edward

The men played over two days and the women on the Sunday only.

Wichmann siblings Darrel and Linda won their respective divisions in the Port Edward Country Club championships last weekend.

Darrel won the title for the second time (the first being in 2023) on a score of 167 for the two rounds.

His sister, Linda Ralfe, won the ladies’ division on a stunning 50 points – and this from a golfer who only plays twice a year.

She explained that the two events she plays in are the memorial day for her late husband Andrew, and the annual club championships. This may have to change going forward.

Linda admitted somewhat sheepishly that she had played out of her socks, off her 46 handicap.

“I had an absolute cracker of a day, it is by far the best I have ever played – and the handicap has now been cut to 25,” she said.

The B-division was won by Henry van Staden on 168 gross. Louis Smit won the C-division on 76 points.

The champs were sponsored by Niekie and Hannalie Wichmann, owners of Migamed Pharmacy in Port Edward. They are originally from Pretoria.

In case you are wondering, they are related.

Linda explained that it’s a distant relation – five generations back or so – and laughed about the old joke that you can shake a tree and a Wichmann will fall out.

Further, she said there are in fact four (known to her) ‘Nicky’ Wichmanns.

There is her sister Nikki, her sister-in-law Nikki, a cousin in Wartburg who married a Nichola, and Niekie of Migamed Pharmacy.
