New South Coast Hockey Club makes inroads
Competing in the Durban League has exposed the players to a higher standard of hockey and provided invaluable match experience.
The newly formed South Coast Hockey Club is putting the region back on the competitive hockey map.
The club was founded by Luke Davies after a conversation with others keen to play against more established sides more often.
From the outset, Luke, who is also the head coach, has been determined to see what the young players could achieve.
A game was arranged against Gongs Hockey Club team in Durban, with the men travelling north to see if they had what it takes.
The result? A victory for the South Coast team.
Following the game, Gongs invited the club to enter the Durban League as their second team, giving the team the chance to regularly compete against quality opposition.
And the results are beginning to show.
In their latest fixture, South Coast Hockey Club faced Gryphons 2 and beat them 9-1.
The club welcomes players, supporters and members of the community who want to get involved and help build something special in the region.
The squad at this stage comprises a lot of youngsters, including Stryda Perry, Wynand Petzer, Josh Pillay, Dru du Bruyn, Sam Hamilton, Tim Dladla, Declan Ornsby, Mitch Calder, Dylan Prepok, Siya Magaqa, David Bunge, Troy Oosthuizen, Hluma Zembe, Cody Vorster, plus coach Luke Davies, manager Lisa Petzer and physio Bonita Vere.
