Orchids bloom at summer show

Orchid growers from around the country descended on the South Coast last weekend.

THE Alfred County Orchid Society was formed in July 1984, by a group of orchid enthusiasts residing on the South Coast, to promote the understanding, cultivation and hybridisations of orchids and to preserve local indigenous orchids.

One of the highlights for this organisation is its annual orchid and exotic plant fair at Stephward Estate. The three-day show took place last weekend. This year saw many local and countrywide orchid experts at the fair discussing presentation, growth, habitat, potting mediums and general growing requirements.

From big and bright to pale and petite, the show boasted some exceptionally beautiful orchids.

Flower lovers were impressed with the high standard. For growers, it proved to be a lucrative weekend with many sales of the flowers.

The society has grown over the years and has developed into an active, informative and progressive group that ranges from the beginner to the experienced grower. Its emblem, the disa caffera is one of the many indigenous orchids found along our coast.
