Craft beers all round… (hic)

DID you know that some craft beers are a lot more potent than the normal fare?
Nevertheless, what a great idea by Vicky Wenzel and her Wozani team to organise an event with a difference – the Hook, Vine and Craft Beer Festival – at the Margate beachfront last weekend.
It wasn’t just any old beer festival with busty German wenches blowing the froth off a few, but a fine display of carefully crafted beers from micro breweries as far afield as Lions River proudly showing off their produce.
Craft beer is a phenomenon catching on worldwide and it was great to see (and taste) that there is also local flair.
Andy Turner and Natalie Danks, from Pennington Basset Breweries, were among the favourites with their “Pennington Pride”, “Befreckled Red Irish Ale”, Umdoni Gold Belgian Ale” and more.
Then there was the Toti Brewing Company and Lions River. Of course, there were dozens of bottled beers from around the world also available from the more traditional bar.
The true character of the event had to be Margate’s colourful Dalene Starr (who runs “Come Dine with D”). She actually dives for oysters and then summons anyone within shouting distance to sample her oyster in a ‘Bloody Mary’ shooter. They were absolutely ‘moreish’.
Then there was Shelly Beach’s Charlie Keiser who displayed his rather unique wines (for this century, anyway). His Farrugut 1303 company produces wine just as they once did in ancient Rome. A bit spicy for some, but an interesting concept all the same.
Other fine wines, great food and live music helped make this a truly special event. The coast certainly needs more of this.
