Families want answers

Someone needs to be held accountable.

THE families of three pupils who drowned at Margate last Sunday want to know why their children drowned.

They are demanding answers from the teachers who had accompanied the pupils on a school excursion.

Ten teachers from Sibongumusa High in Pietermaritzburg had travelled to the South Coast with the pupils to attend a soccer and netball tournament.

A beach outing was part of the excursion.

But witnesses claim the pupils arrived at the beachfront after 5pm when the lifesavers had already gone off duty.

Holidaymakers and local residents managed to rescue some of the drowning pupils who were caught in a rip. Two bodies were recovered and one is still missing.

It is alleged that the teachers had left the pupils unsupervised at the beach and gone off to have a few drinks.

If this is true, the education department has to be held accountable.

Little wonder the community is incensed by the teachers’ conduct.
