Gamalakhe’s pencil artist Menzi wants to draw more

Created with an ordinary pencil, Menzi's art work is one of the best of Gamalakhe.

It’s been said that the eyes are the windows to the soul, and that’s exactly what Menzi Nxele has captured in his drawings. Created with an ordinary pencil, Menzi’s work has been trending in the township of Gamalakhe, as well as on social media.

The 23-year-old revealed his artistic ability when he was still in primary school. “I discovered I could draw when I was very young. Cars, animation and posters were what I would draw mostly. Over the years my drawing ability has grown.” he explained.

“Every piece of my artwork starts as a sketch idea. My style, choice of medium and subject matter are some of the elements that set me apart from the next artist. I am best known for my pencil drawings and paintings.”

The brother to two, who attended Port Shepstone Secondary, is largely self-taught and believes success comes through hard work and dedication. Menzi wanted to become more than just a self-educated artist, so he studied Fine Art at the Durban University of Technology to know more about his talent.

Apart from creating art, Menzi is also the director of Wright Creatives SA and a fitness trainer at HardWalk boot camp in Gamalakhe.

“There is not much to do on the South Coast apart from finding a way to gain income. But finding clients on the coast is a challenge. Some people do not understand visual arts, because exposure to fine art is really limited,” he explained.

“The market for artwork on the South Coast is low, or I just don’t know about them. There are however, initiatives that help up-and-coming artists with exposing their work.”

Currently, Menzi works as a professional artist doing artworks for private clients. Being the director of Wright Creatives SA has given him the opportunity to work with other local aspiring artists who do different forms of art.
