8 toasty tips to stay warm this winter

Check out these eight tips to keep you warmer for longer this winter.

With KZN and South Africa experiencing the chilly grip of winter, use these tips to stay warm.

1. Warm yourself up first

It’s easier to increase your body temperature rather than the room temperature, plus it’s more eco-friendly. Instead of turning up the heat in your house, put on another layer of clothing.

2. Wear a hat

Remember your mother saying you lose most of your body heat through your head? Well that’s not actually true, but you do lose heat from any of your skin that’s exposed. So put on your hat or even better, a beanie, even if you’re inside.

3. Turn on the ceiling fan

It’s a known fact that warm air rises to the top, so put your fan on its lowest setting in a clockwise direction to push the warm air back down to where you are.

4. Alternate between hot and cold water while showering

A hot shower might immediately warm you up, but a cold shower will improve the blood circulation between your skin and organs, and give you a stronger immune system.

5. Block door drafts with a pool noodle

Cut a pool noodle in half lengthwise, wrap it in fabric and slide it under your door to keep the heat in and the cold out.

6. Dress your windows up in thicker curtains

Replace thin curtains with heavier wool or fleece drapes in the winter, but remember to open them on sunny days for free heat.

7. Bake all day

Using your oven will heat up the whole house. Plus there is nothing better than the smell of fresh baked goods.

8. Layer your bed covers

Put fluffy blankets closer to your skin. Thin, dense blankets should be on top to prevent convective heat loss. Also, don’t put your bed right up against an exterior wall.
