SUCCESS is often measured by where someone finishes, but the most inspiring stories begin with where they started. These are the words of Isipingo-born teacher, Sholeen Brijmohan, who hopes to inspire young women ahead of Women’s Month, which falls in August.

“My journey began in council housing, where every cent mattered. Like many young people growing up in challenging circumstances, I faced uncertainty about what the future might hold,” explained Brijmohan.

The 34-year-old added that she knew early on in life that education would be the tool she would use to create a more stable, brighter future for herself and her family.

Brijmohan grew up in a modest council flat in Isipingo. Her father’s battle with diabetes eventually forced him to close his panel beating business, leading to financial hardship. My mother became the foundation of our family. She added that it was her mother’s active involvement in community service and local politics that inspired Brijmohan to follow the same path.

The Amanzimtoti resident is a community activist for service delivery in the Isipingo community and served as the public relations officer for the Isipingo Community Policing Women’s Sub-Forum.

“There were days when I had no money for food or electricity, but every lesson learned, every examination written, and every qualification achieved became another step towards the future I envisioned. That determination led me to earn a degree, a diploma, and multiple professional certifications. I believe that investing in yourself is one of the greatest decisions you can make. Today, I am honoured to have been recently appointed as the principal of an independent school,” said Brijmohan.

Brijmohan explained that as an educator, she believes every child deserves to be seen, encouraged and challenged to achieve their best

“There will be setbacks, disappointments and moments you feel like giving up, but what defines you is the decision to keep moving forward. To every young person facing uncertainty, know this, your current circumstances are not your final destination. You may not control where your journey begins, but you have the power to influence where it leads. Learn new skills, relish every chance you get at educating yourself and never underestimate what is possible when you refuse to let your circumstances determine your future,” concluded Brijmohan.
