VIDEO: Residents battle sugar cane farm fire

Video footage shows Empangeni residents in KwaZulu-Natal battling to extinguish a fire that engulfed uMhlathuze Valley Sugar (UVS) Farm.

It is believed a farmer rallied people from nearby to bring the flames under control on Sunday,Zululand Observer reported.

In the video, the fire is seen raging through the area as residents battle to extinguish it.

The blaze was quickly brought under control, averting disaster. The cause of the fire remains unknown.

In a separate incident, a fire broke out at a cooking oil factory and later spread to a neighbouring paint factory in Durban in March.

The large fire, whose cause is still unknown, is said to have started just after 5am at the Africa SunOil factory on South Coast Road in Mobeni.

Municipal spokesperson Thabo Mofokeng told The Citizen firefighters and other emergency personnel had been called to the scene to get the blaze under control. He added there were fears of the fire spreading to nearby factories on the same road.

“So far, there have been no injuries reported, as no one was inside the factory when the fire started,” he said.
