Budding artists of the Durban School for the Hearing Impaired will enjoy their art classes even more, thanks to a donation of art supplies and equipment from the Upper South Coast Art Association (USCAA).

Librarian, Theseni Narasiah, with help from Lydia Dall, has been teaching art classes to the pupils every Monday from 1pm to 2pm in the activities room since August.

“Last year I noticed we didn’t offer anything for the hearing impaired in our library activities and so I invited some of the pupils to the library,” said Theseni, who has been paying for the art supplies out of her own pocket to keep the classes going.

“The pupils do art at school, but resources are limited. We are thankful to USCAA for its donation of art equipment.

It will go a long way to help these 12 pupils.

They really enjoy their art classes and it has been going strong since August.”

The donation, at a cost of R1,000, is from the sale of paintings from USCAA’s last art exhibition. “We always donate the money from our exhibitions to a charity and we prefer to support local charities,” said USCAA’s president, Joan Ray. “Being hearing impaired is not a handicap when it comes to art and we will invite the pupils to exhibit their art at our next exhibition at Lords and Legends in September, which is also the club’s 30th anniversary.” If you would like to make a donation of old art material or funds, contact Theseni on 031-3115882 or 083-666-4390.
