Mugged man injured in Kingsway hit-and-run

A Toti man was a victim of a hit-and-run in the early hours of Saturday morning, 13 July after he chased down a thief who had stolen his wallet and car keys.

The 42-year-old man, who did not wish to be named, and some bystanders had chased the thief down Kingsway in Warner Beach and were waiting for Toti SAP when he was hit by a white Suzuki Alto at about 3.30am.

“I was driving down Kingsway by the Bella Vista Hotel while on duty and I saw two men having an altercation,” said ET Security operations manager, Alex Chapman.

“When I questioned them, I found out the one man had stolen the other man’s wallet and keys, which I found on his person when I searched and subsequently arrested him.

The mugging victim was pacing up and down Kingsway when he was hit by the vehicle travelling at high speed.

The driver made no attempt to stop. I gave chase and caught him in the vicinity of the chimney tree and contacted Toti SAP and Metro Police to arrest him.”

Eric Koole (52), who stopped to assist when he witnessed the altercation between the two men, said he tried to warn the man.

“I told him to get out of the road, but he didn’t listen. I saw the vehicle approaching, going north. As I tried to warn him again, the vehicle hit him and he flew.”

The seriously injured man was transported to Kingsway Hospital, before being transferred to City Hospital in Durban for an operation on Sunday.

“City Hospital had a neurosurgeon on duty who operated on him as he had a blood clot and bleeding on the brain,” said his sister.

“He’s in a lot of pain and he has a long recovery ahead of him. He’s been booked off work for four to six weeks. We are just taking each day as it comes.”
