Putting foot from Cape Town to Gauteng
Intrepid group of men are walking from Cape Town to Johannesburg to make a difference.
In an effort to make a difference, a Kimberley man is walking from Cape Town to Johannesburg.
Darryl Atwell (37) passed through Toti on Saturday where his team of five was sponsored a meal at Clearwater Spur before they camped on the beachfront. He left Cape Town on 1 March with only Anthony Esterhuysen (35) for company.
“We originally didn’t have a charity, but we will now collaborate with the Reach for a Dream foundation that fulfill the dreams of children fighting life-threatening diseases,” said Darryl. “I wanted to try and change people’s mind sets about life and show them that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. I wanted to set myself free from my own phobias and fears, and do something in honour of Madiba.
When we left Cape Town we had no sponsors and had to rely on people to help us with food, donations and shelter, In turn we shared a message of positivity,” said Darryl who was employed in the hospitality industry.
Along the way the group expanded to five in total, including a 59-year-old man for whom Darryl is keen to get a bicycle or similar mode of transport sponsored for, to continue the journey and carry their supplies. “We left Cape Town with a 25kg pack on our backs. We have discarded a lot along the way and our packs now weight about 12kg.” If you can help with a transport sponsorship, contact Darryl on 071-597-3965.
“We will walk non-stop to Johannesburg. From there we will walk to Kimberley where my parents will organise rafts for us to travel down the Orange River until the West Coast. Then we will walk back to Cape Town to conclude our trip. I hope to arrive before Christmas, but it will probably be in late January.”
