Letter writer gets stamp of approval from PO contest
A Kamalinee Primary School pupil won a provincial writing competition based on Water Week.
The Post Office held a letter writing competition in which pupils had to write about how water impacts on their lives.
A total of 74 letters were shortlisted and sent from the school to the Post Office. After a thorough judging process, the school yielded the provincial winner, Shivani Hemraj, a grade 7A pupil.
Shivani was presented with her prize of R5,000 in a Post Office savings account at the school on Thursday, 12 September, while her school won as well.
“My letter was about the importance of water, and the way in which people use water was my inspiration,” said Shivani. “I will use my winnings to start a savings account.”
Winning has encouraged her to write more. “Reading and writing opens the doors to the world’s greatest adventures,” she said.
“It is very encouraging our pupils are inspired to write,” said school principal, Jagatheesan Naidoo. “We are passionate about reading and creative writing in our school, that is why we formed the Bookworm Club. To experience the world, you must simply open a book. It will take you to many places far and wide.”
