Burglaries almost double in Toti

Home burglaries in Toti have almost doubled, according to the latest provincial crime statistics, released on Thursday, September 19.

Increases include burglary: home up from 583 to 914; car/motorbike theft up from 288 to 319; and home robbery up from 33 to 47.

Decreases include murder down from 20 to 13; total sexual crimes down from 54 to 49; attempted murder down from 140 to 28; drug-related crimes down from 301 to 229; car-jacking down from 90 to 80; and theft no category down from 653 to 566.

The classification theft no category includes all thefts not captured under categories such as vehicles, home or businesses. These are petty thefts such as bag snatching, pickpocketing and stolen cellphones.

There was no change in robbery (aggrevated) at 252 incidents.

“As the CCPO, looking at the crime stats for Toti we can honestly say this reflects what we have seen on the ground, and attending call-outs to house breakings has been the biggest demand on our resources for the year,” said CCPO chairman, Richard Allkins.

“What is more alarming is that more and more crime is going unreported as victims fail to report minor break-ins due to the time involved in logging the complaint and the belief that it is going to serve no purpose anyway.

On a positive note what we can report is that due to the CCPO, Toti SAP, Metro Police, the dog squad and local security companies working together over the last few months, there have been numerous arrests for housebreaking and theft in the Toti area.

Having a radio network where all the role players can talk to each other and assist in combatting crime has definitely strengthened the fight against crime in our area, resulting in a notable drop in the call-outs we have been getting for housebreaking and other crimes.

As a community we need to continue to report crime as this is the only way we can put pressure on government to commit more resources to our area. As the CCPO we thank the community and businesses who continue to support us, as without your support the infrastructure we have put together over the last six years would not exist.”
