Ladybirds’ talent gives new lease on life

THE Poinsettia Ladybirds, a choir comprising 16 members, are spreading cheer through their singing.

“The idea to start to up a choir came about after a group of singers from Umdoni Village performed at an event at Poinsettia Park earlier in the year.

I decided to start up our own group, chatted to a few women and 38 people came to the first meeting,” said choir leader, Joan Schubotz.

Although the numbers dwindled, 16 members have remained committed. “It has given us an absolutely new lease on life. We have lots of fun,” said Joan.

The group meets for practise twice a week. “Members are very keen. If practise falls on a public holiday, we still meet.”

The choir focuses on happy songs. At a function at Poinsettia in July, they sang songs from the First and Second World Wars, which saw the audience join in.

“We are now in preparation for our concert in October, where we will perform two numbers from Broadway. At Christmas we plan on singing carols to spread festive cheer.”

The choir sings many old songs. If anyone wants to hire them, contact Joan on 072-284-4056.
