The incident happened on Monday, 30 September in the parking lot at Shad Place. A resident, who had been fishing, noticed the alarm of a white Toyota Corolla had been activated and saw a man seated in the driver’s seat. The criminal got out and jumped into a white Polo parked next to the Toyota, which drove off.
“The door was slightly open and I found a cellphone lying on the driver’s seat. At least 15 incoming calls were missed,” said the resident, who did not wish to be named.
As the car’s owner was not around, he took the cellphone to Toti police station. He was directed to the detective branch, but was told a case could only be registered by the owner. “The owner was located and he drove the car to the detective branch and was re-directed to the police station.”
Unbeknown to the owner, the thief had followed him to the police station parking lot. While the witness and car owner were in the charge office, the thief smashed the driver’s window of the Corolla in the hope of recovering his cellphone.
“On the cellphone I found several photos, including one of the thief. I showed the photo to cleaners who had witnessed the break-in and they recognised him as the same man who had broken into the vehicle an hour earlier.”
The resident confirmed a week after the incident, a white Corolla was stolen from Shad Place.
