Nsimbini NGO garners mayoral award

IGUGU Labantu, a community-based project in Nsimbini, which has partnered with Toti-based NGO, A Centre That Serves (ACTS), won the community development category in the Mayor’s Awards For Excellence.

Project co-ordinator, Gcina Mthsali collected R10,000 prize money, a printer, a laptop and a trophy at a prestigious function held at the ICC on Friday, 15 November. “I couldn't believe it when Igugu Labantu was announced the winner out of four finalists. I did not expect to win, as we have been in operation for only three years and the other organisations have been around for many years.”

Igugu Labantu was nominated by a community member in June. “In September city officials paid us a visit to find out more about our project.” In October, Igugu Labantu made the final four out of 1,260 nominations.

“I am humbled by the recognition. It gives me the strength to work harder and to encourage the community to join us.” Igugu Labantu is currently involved in three projects, sewing, beadwork and gardening. Besides sewing a wide variety of items, the organisation has also set-up a new group who are sewing traditional clothes. A knitting section is on the cards early next year.”We have knitting machines, but need a teacher to show us how to operate them.” If anyone is able to assist contact Acts on 031-903-1888.

A vegetable gardening project is also reaping rewards. “People in the community are enjoying fresh cabbage, spinach, beetroot, onions and green pepper. We sell some of the veggies, but also distribute them to disadvantaged families.”

The awards, endorsed by Mayor Cllr James Nxumalo recognises individuals, groups and organisations that have made a positive contribution in improving the quality of life for people.

The awards are divided into six categories: Crime prevention; promotion of tourism; wealth and job creation; community development; clean environment and biodiversity

“eThekwini Municipality always strives to recognise its citizens as the pursuit of excellence requires dedication and partnerships in order to incubate a culture of selfless giving,” said Nxumalo.
