In 2012 the library encouraged grade 7 pupils at Dr Made School to read and recently launched a book club for them. “They were reading books of their choice and pupils had to come to school very early to do their storytelling from what they had read,” said head librarian, Sibongile Doncabe. “They also wrote reviews on some of the books they read to instil a culture of writing.”
The book club proved to be one of the best tools to enhance pupils’ learning and reading skills. “The book club motivated them to engage in conversation and improve on their vocabulary and public speaking skill,” said Sibongile. “This helped pupils overcome their stage fright.”
All members did well in their school exams and will progress to grade 8. Sibongile and the grade 7 teacher, Mrs Zondi organised an awards ceremony for the pupils last week and they all received a small gift to take home. They all read many books, but Shange Smanga and Nzuza Nonjabulo were the top readers, with 96 books read.
