Speed reduction measures are being put in place at the bridge, where the SUN published an article covering the frequency of accidents there, with resident Cedric Carr sharing his traumatic near-death experience following a motor vehicle accident which left his bakkie totalled.

On May 28, a low profile metal speed bump was the first of the speed reduction measures to be installed.

Ward 97 councillor André Beetge informed the community that road maintenance and bridge repair work is underway along the bridge, which is situated near the Amanzimtoti CBD along Andrew Zondo Road.

He added that the railings will be replaced and concrete barriers will be installed along the bridge.

“The working hours will be from 07:00 until 16:30 daily and the project is expected to take around 14 working days to complete. Please exercise caution and patience while planning routes in accordance, as there may be traffic delays around the working area during this period,” said Beetge.

The response to the project’s commencement has been largely positive on Facebook. One resident, Allan Kühnel, said, “This has been a long time coming.” Many shared his sentiments, simply commenting “At last,” or “Finally”.

Another resident, Riaan Groenewald pleaded with officials to ensure the area is well-lit so that the speed reduction measures are clearly visible to motorists.
