Multi-art centre planned for Adam’s

A multi-art centre is being planned for Adam's Mission.

The Adam’s Mission Multi-Art Centre will be one of KZN’s major heritage sites, featuring a cultural venue and music academy tracing back the history of Virginia Jubilee Choir, RT Caluza and others.

“The centre will service the community at Adam’s Mission and throughout KZN,” said project director, Zwakele Msane.

The centre will be situated at the old Jubilee Centre in at Adam’s College and officially launched on 17 September, 2014. It is hoped the centre will be officially recognised by the National Department of Arts and Culture and Department of Higher Education as a heritage site and learning institution. “Unfortunately we have no permanent funding, so we are seeking funding from overseas,” said Zwakele

“The centre will provide development programmes undertaken for multi-art activities in partnership with the National Department of Arts and Culture to re-develop the Adam’s Mission Art Gallery, which was revamped by Hamorny Gold Mines in June 2001, into a contemporary, multi-disciplinary arts centre.”

The multi-art centre will consist of exhibition spaces, a workshop and studio, a 200-seat performance studio, residency apartment for artists, a sculpture garden, African herbal garden, sound recording studio, video editing suites, amphitheatre and traditional cafe.

“The core focus of the centre will be to develop and deliver innovative, high quality contemporary arts programmes that maximise opportunities and avenues for communities to engage with contemporary, multi-arts practise,” said Zwakele. “The centre’s programme will encompass all forms of the visual, performing, literary and new media arts.”
