Committed teacher’s outreach efforts lauded as she retires

Kamalinee Women’s Committee (KWC) chairman, Mrs NN Ponnan scooped four awards for service excellence and community upliftment from various sources.

Mrs Ponnan was the recipient of the following awards:

• Ammen Awards – Mrs Ponnan and her team was nominated for this prestigious award in the category community upliftment and was rewarded for her hard work and dedication towards Kamalinee Primary School’s indigent pupils and parents of the community.

• Stars in Education – This award is presented to a teacher or committee for their efforts in making a positive difference in the lives of children and the community. Mrs Ponnan finished sixth in the country. She attended a prestigious awards ceremony to receive her award and cash prize of R1,000, which she donated to KWC.

• LeadSA Hero – A weekly feature in the Sunday Tribune newspaper recognises the sterling work teachers do and Mrs Ponnan featured in the 6 October edition.

• National Teacher Awards – Mrs Ponnan also received an award for lifetime teaching excellence at a prestigious function at the Umhlanga Convention Centre. She placed third in the Umlazi district. She will now represent the district as a provincial finalist.

“After serving the education fraternity for 34 years as a teacher and foundation phase Head of Department, Kamalinee Primary School bids farewell to Mrs Ponnan, who has retired from the profession this year,” said Kamalinee principal, Jagatheesan Naidoo. “The staff, pupils and myself wish her everything of the best on her retirement. Her sterling work to KWC and our institution is indeed appreciated.”
