Dog walk to help home SPCA’s adoption dogs
TOTI SPCA volunteers held a dog walk for animals up for adoption at the animal welfare organisation at Baggies Beach on Sunday, 2 February.
“Our Saturday walkers want to do a volunteer doggie walk on the first Sunday of every month to promote our adoption dogs. They have made SPCA bandanas for the dogs so people are aware they are up for adoption. At our first walk at Baggies, the public expressed an interest in the dogs,” said SPCA manager, Tracey Girling.
Overall, the SPCA had 25 animals adopted in October. There was was slight decline in adoptions over the holidays. “Currently we have 22 dogs and four kittens on our adoption block.”
An animal can be adopted after a property inspection by the SPCA. However, if the property doesn’t meet the criteria, the SPCA may turn down the application to adopt a pet.
Toti SPCA will only re-home an animal within its area of operation, which is from the Umlaas Canal in the north, to Hibberdene in the south.
The adoption fees include the first vaccinations of the animal; de-worming; compulsory sterilisation of all male and female dogs and cats.
After the adoption process has been completed, the owner will be responsible for annual vaccinations and any veterinary treatment that may be required.
Owning a pet is a big responsibility, one has to care for it for 10 to 15 years or more. An owner has to socialise and spend time with the pet, afford to feed and house it. If interested in adopting an animal or able to assist with fundraising activities, helping or joining the fundraising committee, contact the SPCA on 031-904-2424/5 during office hours.
