Last chance to register to vote

If Toti voters have not registered yet, they have this Saturday and Sunday, 8 and 9 February between the hours of 8am and 5pm to be able to vote in the general election later this year.

This is the final voter registration weekend. Everyone from the age of 16 should register, although only people who are already 18 or who turn 18 on the day that the election date is gazetted, will be able to cast their vote. People who are 16 now, will be 18 in 2016, when the next local (municipal) election will be held.

Ward boundaries are determined by the number of registered voters in an area. The IEC uses the number of people who register now in 2014 to calculate and determine ward boundaries for 2016.

To register you need to be a South African citizen and in possession of a bar-coded SA identity book, the new SA identity smart card or a valid SA temporary identity document.

“If you’ve registered and voted before, you should still be registered, but administrative errors do occur, so it is better to be safe than sorry. Rather have it checked during the registration weekend,” said ward 97 councillor, Andre Beetge. “You will not be able to register on election day. You have to register now, so that your information can be captured onto the voters roll. If you don’t register, you will not appear on the voters roll and you will not be able to vote on election day.”

To check whether and where you are registered to vote, SMS your ID number to 32810 (at a cost of R1 per SMS) and you will receive a return message with the required information, or look up ‘my voter registration details’ on www.elections.org.za.

You should register at the voting station closest to your home address, but make sure the voting station is within the ward where you reside. The following voting stations exist between Illovo Beach and Athlone Park:

Ward 97 – Warner Beach Junior Primary (Harcombe Road), Lions Club (Hall Road), Amanzimtoti Civic Centre (corner of Hutchison and Riverside roads) and Doonheights Primary School (Longacres Drive).

Ward 93 – Kuswag Skool (Kuswag Lane), Umbogintwini Primary School (Prince Road, Athlone Park) and Athlone Park library (off Linscott Road).

The date of the election day is still to be announced. For more information, visit www.elections.org.za.
