Toti poet to showcase her skills

Toti poet Thabile Mafungwase continues to make a name for herself in local poetry circles.

Thabile, who hails from Ezimangweni, will close Valentine’s month on Friday, 28 February at Khulangolwazi High School in Montclair. “I will perform my poem ‘Razo Yami’. I’m very excited as my mentor Sne ‘Brownskin’ Mkhize, who organised the show, and renowned Durban poet Mxolisi Mtshali will be there,” she said.

Thabile featured in the Sun in 2012 when she was approached to recite one of her poems at the Royal Hotel in Durban in celebration of Women’s Month.

“Since then I have recorded the poem ‘Sitha Sami’ that I performed at the Royal Hotel and I will soon record another two poems, one about my school, Umkhumbi High School and the other one about children grants, entitled ‘There will be consequences and orphans will be borne…’.

My recordings are not yet available, but I hope to release an album next year. I also want to publish my poems, as well as some short stories I have written.”

Thabile’s love for poetry was born in 2006 as a grade 11 pupil at Umkhumbi. She performed at the Natal Playhouse in 2008 during a Heritage Day event, at City Hall in 2011 she was interviewed on Ukhozi FM.

“I’m becoming accepted as a poet and it’s amazing,” said Thabile. “People still enjoy poetry, especially the youth because modern poetry goes with styles. It continues to grow and it always contains a message.”
