Missing divers adrift for three hours
Two divers had a lucky escape on Sunday, 2 March when they drifted almost six kilometres from their dive site off Aliwal Shoal.

The divers, Lauren Dwyer and Chaz Crowhurst went to dive the Produce wreck, north of Aliwal Shoal at about 12.30pm. Both are experienced divers. Lauren is about to qualify as an advanced diving and Chaz is her instructor.
“The skipper, Daniel Smuts reported them missing off their buoy line at about 1.30pm. We alerted the NSRI and started to search for them,” said Walter Bernardis of African Watersports in Umkomaas.
“With an one kilometre current, we initially searched within a one to two kilometre radius from where they went missing.” Numerous boats joined in the search from the NSRI, Scuba Excursions, The Shoal and African Watersports.
“I eventually found them just short of Rocky Bay at about 4.30pm almost one-and-a-half kilometres out to sea. Physically they were 100% and calm, but mentally they must have been worried,” said Walter.
