Pupils to make pledges for Earth Hour

AMANZIMTOTI Earth Hour organiser, Karen van der Spuy has initiated a schools roadshow to educate pupils on the choices they make regarding water, food and energy use in their daily lives.

Earth Hour will be celebrated on Saturday, 29 March. It is the fourth event for Toti, however instead of holding a day of events to commemorate the global campaign, Karen has targeted schools this time round. “I hold a quiz and pupils can win prizes if they answer some Earth Hour questions correctly. I also promote the Earth Hour campaign of ‘how do you honour the earth’, also directing them to wwf.org.za to pledge their promise to the earth. They can see other children’s promises from across the world and as they pledge their promise on the site, the earth globe transforms from a neglected one to a healthy one,” said Karen. Schools targeted by Toti Earth Hour are Warner Beach Preparatory, Esizibeni Sivananda, Toti High, Toti Primary, Kuswag, Kingsway High and Adams College. Earth Hour was initiated in Sydney, Australia in 2007 as a campaign for action on climate change. It has grown to become the world’s largest mass participation event in history – from one city to over 7,000 cities; from one country to seven continents and from two million to hundreds of millions of people. Earth Hour’s mission is three-fold – to bring people together through a symbolic hour-long event, to galvanise people into taking action beyond the hour and to create an inter-connected, global community sharing the mutual goal of creating a sustainable future for the planet. “Amanzimtoti Earth Hour has joined this movement and as a concerned, committed community, have made a difference throughout Toti’s business and private sectors. We have been creating the awareness since 2011 and have continued with this noble cause ever since.”
