NOW that the holidays are a thing of the past, normal bowling has returned to Amanzimtoti Tenpin Bowling Club, based at Dolphin Bowl.

A full league programme has been bowled, with some exceptional scores being achieved.

The situation regarding the leagues is as follows: Monday Taxi Trios sees the team of Unbowlievables unbelievably in the lead on 123 points from High 5’s on 120.5 and Wazzup on 102.5. Individual high scores for the week were recorded by Ron McClatchie on 235, followed by Ricky O’Hare 226 (both left handers). On the women’s side, Cheryl Hambrook achieved 200.

Soho league congratulates Katie Alberts on a fine game of 212, which was later beaten by Gwen with 221. Katie however leads the overall with a +42 for the week.

Thursday doubles league still sees the Master Blasters in the lead from Three’s a Crowd and Hooligans. High scores were recorded by Morne van Wyk 225 and among the women, Bronwen Elbourne 223 and Carol Farrow on 202.

The Friday juniors league saw newcomer Leo Cobianchi, grandson of the renowned Guelfo, lead the pack after the first week of the new season, followed by Aiden Irmscher and Amber Powell.

Phantom league after two weeks showed Ray ‘Lighty’ Holmes, narrowly in the lead on 819 pins from Warren Sturgeon on 810 and Rory Wishart on 805.

Staff league sees John Short with 867 pins leading the way from redhead Angi Pretorius on 824 and Duane Harmisec on 808.

Dolphin Bowl hosted the ATBC mixed doubles tournament on Sunday, 11 May and had a good turnout of 20 teams competing for R6,000 in prize money. The first squad definitely battled in the early conditions, with only the KZN president Colin Hayward showing his mastery on the lanes with a 207 scratch average over five games. Only Pierre du Plooy offered some opposition, with a 193 average in this squad. No women were able to get close to the 200 average mark, however.

The second squad read the lane conditions far better, with first Bronwen Elbourne averaging 200.4 and Jivi Sewcharan 207.4 but it was left to brother and sister combination of Kimi and Theo Govender to lead the way for all others to follow. Theo bowled 1,015 pins while ‘baby sister’ Kimi outshone the rest with 1,003.

The 2014 ATBC mixed doubles champions were Kimi and Theo by 67 pins from the vastly improved team of Donavan Maistry and Sue Bhagwandin followed by ‘masters’ Colin and Gwen Hayward. Special mention must be made of Angi Pretorius who, bowling in her first tournament, finished in 11th place, despite being so nervous she could hardly hold onto the bowling ball.

Bowlers of the month for April were presented with their prizes last week and congratulations go to Logan Naidoo, scratch male and Vish Studzinski, handicap. On the women’s side, Stacey-Lee Hooper held on to the women scratch from Bronwen Elbourne who took handicap.
