Five stand-out performances in 21km/10km events

Waiting for perfect weather to start your training will see you delay as the days are up and down.

ON Sunday, a few Run Walk For Life (RWFL) Toti athletes braved the weather to do the Checkout 21/10km.

All athletes who took part ran personal bests except the Comrades athletes who are on the tapering phase of their training for the next two weeks.

Special mention must be made of Liesl and Bianca Nawrattel, Tanya Gibson, Francesca Shacklady who ran personal bests, as well as Reg Groves who was the second walker home in the 21.1km. For a 60-plus-year-old, that is definitely not bad. Well done.

Waiting for perfect weather to start your training will see you delay as the days are up and down. The best solution is to set yourself a goal to dress correctly for that training session’s weather, and commit to following through with your training. RWFL training days are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at Amanzimtoti High School from 5pm.

For the Comrades group, training is now tapering down. Get the mind right for the big day and remember to start putting all your clothes, goodies and so on together – you do not want to run around on race day to find your favourite running gear.

For the rest, there is training as usual.

On Sunday, 18 May it is the East Coast Big Walk. The Starling Plumbers event has moved to Sunday, 25 May.

On 24 May, the get-together run and breakfast is at Amanzimtoti High School at 5.30am. Inform Jan or Lizette if you are going to attend, for catering purposes. Everybody is welcome as this event is to encourage the Comrades runners. All Comrades runners must be there.

On Sunday, 25 May it is the Starling Plumbers 10km and 5km races.

Saturday, 20 September is the new date for the Cansa Relay which starts at 5pm on Saturday and goes through the night to Sunday morning at 5am. There are four teams so far. Ten-member teams are still welcome to enlist in this prestigious event. The public is welcome to join in. Contact Jan Botha on 082-290-4025. This is not a race but a fun event to honour those who are living with, have died of or survived cancer.

RWFL challenges all schools, sports clubs, companies, school sports teams or families to put teams together. Either get four teams or better RWFL’s four teams. Call Jan on 082-290-4025 for more information.

This weekend, RWFL’s 10km training run is on Saturday from Amanzimtoti High School at 6am. For more on RWFL, call Jan.
