THE Upper South Coast should brace for bitterly cold and extreme weather, with snow expected on the Drakensberg on Thursday evening, 5 June, according to the South African Weather Service.
The south-western part of the Western Cape has experienced mostly, cold, wet and windy weather, however it is set to change dramatically in the latter half of the week as an intense cold frontal system was expected to make landfall over the Cape Peninsula on Wednesday, 4 June.
Snowfalls of a disruptive nature are also forecast over high ground areas of the Cape provinces shifting to the Drakensberg mountains on Thursday night, 5 June into Friday morning, 6 June, when Van Reenen’s pass on the N3 could experience some snow.
While Gauteng will remain fairly mild ahead of the cold front during Thursday, progressive cooling is expected to invade the province from the south on Thursday afternoon. A similar cooling trend is also expected to affect KZN on Thursday, ultimately resulting in much colder conditions for Gauteng and KZN by Friday, persisting over the weekend when nights are expected to be particularly cold, with a high likelihood of overnight frost on Friday night and Saturday night.
A weather alert indicates snowfalls are likely over the Lesotho Drakensberg mountains, as far north as Van Reenen’s pass towards the weekend.
The public is urged to regularly follow weather forecasts on television and radio. Up-to-date information can also be found at www.weathersa.co.za or the SA Weather Service twitter account @SAWeatherServic
