All three Amanzimtoti Golf Club (AGC) men’s league teams will be competing for league honours this coming Sunday.
The premier team will host Durban Country Club first team at home, the B side plays Durban Golf Club B team at their home venue, while the Allerton men take on Cotswold at their home club. Good luck to all the teams, and as the premier team are playing at home it would be lovely to see the fairways lined with spectators supporting the men.
Results from the week saw the Wednesday IPS attract a good field of 32 players, with Les Brown leading the field home on 40 points, followed by Johny Vogel on 39 and Norbert Dupont, also 39. On Friday, the club hosted a fundraising day for a local pre-primary school, so the regular sundowner nine hole competition field was tiny, with only 14 players taking part. Piet Roode took top spot on 21 points, followed by Tommy McNaughton on 18 points.
On Saturday the men played a fourball alliance, two scores to count all round. The team of Robert Roux, Bobby Milne, Les Brown and their pivot Tommy McNaughton led the challenge with a fine 101 points, followed by Nic Brits, CVO, Mike Halse and Peter Tiearney with 98 points. Third spot went to Bruce Whiting, Grant Harris, Gerry Rabe and Mark Brodie with 97 points. The two nearest the pins went to Robert Roux on the seventh and Rob Wilson on the 17th. The jackpot and attendance draw were not won so carry over to next week.
The women played their own version of the Ryder Cup, with the field split into two teams, namely the Plovers and the Cormorants, and the former won with a fine 166 points. The team comprised Delene Berry, Adri Slabbert, Gerda Heydenrych, Wladzia Olivier, Jacqui Porrill and Atri Wilson. The nearest the pin on the 17th remained unclaimed, and there were two 2-clubs from Delene Berry and Gill Symons on the seventh hole.
The KZN Women Golf Association inter club championships are now less than two months away, and the work being done on the course and clubhouse surrounds bear testimony to the club wanting to be the best possible hosts ever of this prestigious event.
The annual summer preparation of the greens will take place from this Sunday, immediately after the completion of the league matches, and continue through until Friday, 5 September. Although this will make conditions a bit difficult for a few weeks, the result will be well worth the inconvenience.
AGC will be holding its annual South Coast Classic fundraising golf day on Sunday, 28 September, and as this has proven to be the most popular tournament of the year, players and sponsors will need to act quickly to secure their position. Tee-off times are available both in the morning and afternoon, and the cost per player is R175. Call Tommy McNaughton on 082-880-8530 or call the club on 031-902-1166 and speak to Wendy for more information or to book your spot.
