Boshoffs lay claim to UGC stableford spoils
Louis Oosthuizen was dangling a bit at the end but he did make the cut.

THE regionals of the Sanlam Cancer regional final were played last Sunday, 24 August at Selborne Golf Club and Umkomaas Golf Club (UGC) was represented in all three divisions by Lindani Mthiyane, Tom Naicker and 13-year-old, Tash Naicker.
Although none of UGC’s players placed, the club was well represented.
Tim Clark started the Barclays tournament, played at Ridgewood Country Club in New Jersey, but unfortunately had to withdraw after the first round. It is suspected that his shoulder is giving him a bit of trouble so the choice to either withdraw or play on wasn’t a hard one. Hopefully he will be okay to play in the Deutsche Bank championships, due to start next week. South Africans who did do well were Ernie Els -11, Charl Schwartzel -4 and Retief Goosen on +2. Louis Oosthuizen was dangling a bit at the end but he did make the cut. Well done to them all.
Wednesday’s individual stableford welcomed Stuart Welch, Earl Hines and son, Jason Hines to the club and competition. The winner on 45 points was, once again, Sue Boshoff. Well done, Sue. In second place was Peter Boshoff, five shots off the pace, on 40 points with Sierd Lamminga in third spot with 39 points. Taking the fourth slot was Rob Finlay on 38 points, counting out both Barrie Taylor and Johan Hugo.
Last Saturday was the popular fourball alliance which was well supported by members. In first place was the formidable team of Bruce Sutcliffe, Kuben Naidoo, Joe Mkhungo and Micky Eriksen on 98 points, followed by Sabiha Bacaus, Jacques Hulley, Derek Airey and Michelle van der Merwe in second place with 95 points. Loosing on a count out was the captain’s crew, consisting of club captain, Peter Toward, Eric Morsner, Michelle van der Westhuizen and Linda Toward, also on 95 points. Sabiha Bacaus took home the jackpot with 12 very good points but the hidden birdie (ninth hole) will be carried over to next week. Bruce Sutcliffe, Derek Airey and Eric Morsner all had two clubs with Clyde Leisegang snatching up the attendance draw. Well done to all the winners and players – commiserations to the captain’s crew – so close and yet so far.
Next week’s competition will be a better ball competition but with a catch – players will only be allowed five clubs and a putter in the bag so choose your weapons well. Understandably there was a bit of controversy with the number of clubs in the bag, deviating from the norm of 14 clubs. It will be interesting to see how well the players manage with fewer clubs.
Sunday will be social golf but there are two groups playing in the morning, so contact the club for a tee time.
Dates to diarise:
On Saturday, 20 September the club hosts the Zimbo trophy in a ‘modified stableford’ format. Peter and Sue Boshoff are the sponsors and conveners.
On Wednesday, 24 September is the tombstone tournament. It’s a fun day and the green fees will be R100 per player which includes the competition fee as well. The time sheets for both the Zimbo trophy and the tombstone tournament are on the notice board.
The usual groups still abound – Gerry Hatricks on Tuesdays and Fridays at 7am, KidzGolf on Saturday mornings between 8am and 9am during school terms and any day now, the six-pin bunch will be starting up their braais again. Watch this space for more details. Not forgetting the 2-4-1 specials during the week on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays – contact the club on 039-973-1042 for more details.
