Huge shots from women golfers secure hard fought league victories

The club has a good special running for all visitors and social golfers.

BOTH Amanzimtoti Golf Club (AGC) women teams played at Port Shepstone last Sunday, in the fourth round of the 2014 league season.

Going in there was nothing to choose between the two sides, which were lying third in their respective pools.

Coming out of this encounter however, Colleen Smit’s Amanzi team had surged to the top of pool one, and Gill Symons’ Toti team had moved up into second spot in pool two. The Amanzi team blew Scottburgh off the course with a resounding 6/0 win, and the Toti team gave Umkomaas a little 5/1 bunt. Great results for the club, with some very hard fought battles as the women had to give huge shots on the day. Well done women.

Still with the women’s news, the KZNLGA inter club championships are drawing ever closer, with less than 45 days to go until the first tee shots are played. The committee is working frantically to pull the event together, and the excitement is building within the club. Any members keen to assist with the running of the event should contact the women’s committee.

Last update on the raffle organised by Shirley Petzer to raise funds for buying of hosepipes: The raffle took place again on Saturday and was won by Sean Mellon. Many thanks to all the members for their support of this endeavour. The final total raised was in excess of R2,600, for which Shirley is most grateful.

On Wednesday there was a good field of 24 players, and considering the greens are very bumpy, the scores posted were not too bad. Dave Richardson beat Michael Slabbert by count out on 36 points to win the meat. Friday’s nine hole sundowner was contested by a great field of 40 players, with Sherwin Jerriah winning with 25 points, followed by Sagaren Chetty on 23 and Vishnu Kistnasamy with 19 in third place. Clive Hill was the recipient of the last prize on offer, winning the count out of players on 18 points.

The women played their KZNLGA Medal and Putts competition on Saturday, and Jacqui Porrill once again displayed a good touch to win the silver division with 71 nett, followed by Delene Berry on 73 nett. Jackie Dunlop won the bronze division with a very good 68 nett, followed by Adri Slabbert with 71 nett. The least number of putts was won by Delene (30), and Jacqui Porrill was nearest the pin on the fourth hole. There were two 2-clubs, from Adri on the 15th and Delene on the fourth hole.

Monthly mug was the order of the day for the men on Saturday, with a fine field of 71 players competing for honours. The A division was won by Mervyn Naidoo with 68 nett, with Robert Roux in second spot on 69 nett. The B division winner was Frans Klopper with 68 nett, with Gordon Dunlop in second with 72 nett. The C division honours went to Peter Avellini with 68 nett, and Clive Hill won the count out for second place on 69 nett.

Best gross on the day for the three divisions went to Sadeak Khader (74), Frans Klopper (83) and Mike Murphy (86). Best overall went to Mervyn, Frans and Peter, all on 68 nett.

The two nearest the pin prizes were won by Mervyn Naidoo (seventh) and Bryant Newton (17th), and the jackpot was not won so carries over to next weekend. Rob Symons won the attendance draw and kindly donated his winnings to the gardens fund.
