Municipality warns of job scam

The scam is being investigated.

eTHEKWINI Municipality has become aware of fraudulent advertisements for ‘municipal vacancies’ placed on Gumtree and AdsAfrica websites last week.

The municipality categorically states it has not placed these advertisements on these sites. Deputy head of the human resources unit, Reginald Mkhize said the advertisements include a fee to be paid by the applicant in order to register or apply for a position.

“The municipality would like to make the public aware that these jobs are fraudulent. As local government, the municipality does not charge the public to apply for jobs. This is a free service. We appeal to the public not to respond to any of these job offers because they are bogus.”

He cited a case where an applicant received an email, supposedly from the municipal E-Careers site, telling the person to go in for an interview and to pay a fee. E-careers is the municipality’s online recruitment system. It is being investigated by the City Integrity and Investigations Unit.

“We are warning the public about these scams so that they do not become victims,” said Mkhize. Contact the City Integrity and Investigations Unit on 0800-202020 to report job scams.
