Cyclist touched by monkeys’ empathy towards injured genet [PHOTOS]

A TOTI cyclist was touched at a display of the caring instincts of wildlife when he encountered an injured genet at the roadside during his bike outing on Sunday morning, September 21 at about 6.30am.
Craig Thompson said he’d been riding along Beach Road past Spur when he noticed the genet laying on its side.
“Its whiskers were still moving and it opened its eyes,” he said. Moved to help it, he tried calling various wildlife organisations, to no avail. As a result, he used a board to move it to the other side of the road, into a shady spot.
“Soon after, a troop of monkeys approached and I was initially concerned they would be aggressive towards it,” said Craig.
However, he was astounded to see the empathy shown by the troop. The dominant monkey began picking flies off the genet and stroking it. “Soon they all gathered round and were quite attentive to the injured animal.”
As he was on his bike, he was unable to do more for the genet and left it in the company of the monkeys.
