Lizette completes her running quest for little cancer fighter
Lizette and her husband are moving back to Gauteng and RWFL bids them farewell.
WHAT a blast the Run Walk For Life (RWFL) family had this past weekend when, after months of hard training, Lizette started her last two legs of running for Emma’s dream fund which began in June with the Comrades, Longest Day.
This past weekend was the 100 Miler and CANSA Relay.
On Friday night at 7pm in cold, rainy conditions, Lizette lined up with runners from all over the country to start the third leg of her quest, the 100 miler Capital Classic which was run at the new athletics track. All smiles and chirpy, they set off to the thunder of the ever-popular naval signal cannon in the three events – the 24 hour, 12 hour and the 100 Miler. During the night, the rain and wind stopped but it stayed cold.
At 7am, the 12 hour longest night race stopped and the 50 Miler (80km) started. By this time, Lizette and the rest of the 100 Miler/24-hour athletes started to shed some of the extra clothes they had on to keep themselves warm. At noon on Saturday, Val Opperman and more athletes joined the group with the last race of the day, the 20 Miler (32km). Val completed her race in good time and Lizette was still going strong at 5.05pm she completed her races with a personal best time of 22 hours and 5 minutes.
After Lizette received her medal she was driven to Kingsway High School to join the rest of the RWFL clan and friends at the Cansa Relay for Life. This was a memorable experience to honour those living with cancer, fighting cancer, those who have died due to the disease as well as survivors of cancer. Although being tired and sporting blisters on her feet, Lizette kept going, walking for Emma’s dream fund. She clocked an amazing 187km in two days. People like Lizette are a true example to everyone.
The rest of the runners enjoyed a peaceful 13km run on Saturday morning, as they also did the Cansa Relay.
Lizette and her husband are moving back to Gauteng and RWFL bids them farewell. She will however be back in KZN for next year’s Comrades.
On Sunday, 26 September the Township to Township takes place.
