Crime warnings issued to alert public of scams

There has been an increase in ATM fraud cases.

TOTI police has issued a number of warnings to the community to be vigilant in order to be safe.

“Beware of non-reputable dealers when making purchases or selling goods via the internet. A number of cases have been reported where people are being deprived of their goods or money. This is not limited just to Amanzimtoti – it has become a countrywide problem,” said Toti SAPS communications officer, Capt Charlene van der Spuy.

She also warned ATM users to be vigilant. “If someone tries to assist you when you have not requested help, you may become a possible victim. If you need assistance at the ATM, if possible get assistance from a bank employee. We have had an increase in ATM fraud cases being reported.”

Home owners are also advised to safeguard their property. When asleep at night, do not leave any valuable items near open windows. We have noticed an increase in general theft from residential homes, where valuables are being stolen through open windows during the night.”
