Rock ruins rally champs showdown

A field of 10 rally cars, four quads and one off road vehicle had entered and the fun began under cloudy skies and strong winds.

THE 2014 Natal Motorcycle and Car Club Rally Championship was decided in the Umzinto area on Saturday, 15 November.

With six runs of the same 8,6km stage, the fifth run being as the sun set and the last being held in the dark, a great battle was expected.

A field of 10 rally cars, four quads and one off road vehicle had entered and the fun began under cloudy skies and strong winds. The route was a good challenge of driver skill and clear instructions were needed by the navigator to obtain good times.

The first run placed Chris De Wit and Jarryde Fouche in their Toyota Conquest 0,3 seconds ahead of Brian and Ashley Scott in their VW Polo. In the second run, the order changed with the Polo 4,1 seconds quicker, placing Brian and Ashley 3,8 seconds ahead. On the third run, Chris unfortunately caught a rock that had been dislodged from the bank, which punctured the right front tyre of the Conquest. After driving most of the stage on the flat, the tyre was destroyed and more than a minute lost but this did not stop them from driving hard to try and reduce the time lost and setting fastest times on the last three runs.

The final result was Brian and Ashley Scott winning by 1 minute 3,2 seconds and thus the championship was theirs. Chris De Wit and Jarryde Fouche were second and Alan Hooper and Wayne Westwood third in their Toyota Corolla. Drivers champion is Brian Scott, 5,5 points ahead of Chris De Wit and navigators champion is Ashley Scott, 25,2 points ahead of Wayne Westwood.

Well done to all who took part. Only two cars did not finish due to breakdowns on their fifth runs and the off road vehicle did not do the last two stages in the dark, however the end result was great.
