New centre addresses Umbumbulu skills shortage
There will be training programmes in trades such as plumbing, carpentry and welding.

THE skills shortage in Umbumbulu will soon be a thing of the past with the establishment of the Umbumbulu Multi-Purpose Centre.
This multi-million rand centre was donated by Transnet to the Sobonakhona Traditional Council and eThekwini Municipality.
The aim is to address skills shortages in the area, especially among the youth. Ward 49 councillor, Godfrey Maphumulo said the centre would offer skills training programmes in trades such as carpentry, plumbing and welding. “It is a blessing to our community to have this centre, as our people won’t need to travel long distances to get to technical colleges or training centres. We encourage young people to take advantage of this opportunity,” said Maphumulo.
The centre will also house the office of Sobonakhona Traditional Council. “Most young people in our area are unemployed and with the skills that they will acquire from this training centre, they will be able to be self-employed and self-sufficient. We are going to work hand-in-hand with Umbumbulu Development Agency to ensure that after they have been trained, they are mentored in starting their own
businesses,” he said.
