MOP keen to help more children

They have been encouraging their children to not always be on the receiving end.

MOTHER of Peace (MOP) in Illovo recently held its AGM, with a clear future focus on reaching out to more vulnerable children.

A common theme in their newsletters are children’s craft and a new elephant mural with the message “no child is left behind”. They have been encouraging their children to not always be on the receiving end and the children have been busy with various crafts in order to generate a small income from the sales of craft.

They aim to strengthen their sustainability goals because there are many children out there who are in need of homes and families that they would like to provide for. “To meet the needs of our society’s most vulnerable, we need to generate an income and every bit helps,” said general manager, Iris Canham.

The key craft item, the MOP elephant was inspired by Dutch volunteer Mallory Pfaff, who liked the idea of making patchwork elephants and selling them for MOP. “She was not aware of the powerful and significant message that our biggest land animal symbolises. Highly intuitive and with excellent maternal instincts, elephants are not orphaned in the wild because the matriarch takes care of them. It is the same concept that it takes a village to raise a child, which is the cornerstone of MOP.”

MOP has been to a few local markets with the children’s craft and has been selling the elephants for R50 where all sales and proceeds go towards recreational and youth development goals to ensure the development of a child’s full potential. They are also available from the small craft studio at MOP.
