Don’t damage pensioners’ tennis courts

We want people to know these courts are not derelict.

Members of the Kingsburgh Tennis Club appeal to the Toti public to not damage their courts.

After the Easter weekend, the pensioners arrived at the courts, which are sited between Doonside beach and Baggies beach, to find someone had moved sheet metal on to the courts and built a low wall in between the two courts.

Maureen Proctor of the club believes someone thought the courts were derelict and took advantage to set up ramps for skateboarding. The board warning against trespassing was damaged and now lies among the rubble.

“The people who built the wall were very considerate, but did not realise that the courts are still in use,” she said. “If they had consulted with us, we may have found an amicable solution. Instead they chose to damage the courts.

When players over the age of 70 have to run to return the ball, that wall would have been very dangerous.”

The group consists of about 12 players who play on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.

“We are fighting a losing battle to be able to stay fit and healthy and keep playing tennis for as long as possible. There are no other facilities for seniors who do not want to play league and we cannot afford any other club.

We have tried our best to maintain the courts and we want people to know these courts are not derelict and they are being used.”
