Two hurt in head-on crash on R102 bridge

While firemen used the Jaws of life to free the injured, paramedics clambered into the wreckages to stabilise them.

Two people were injured, one seriously so, after two vehicles collided head-on along the R102 on the Illovo River bridge on Friday evening, 12 June.

The accident’s cause is speculative and will be investigated by police.

Netcare 911 paramedics and the fire department who responded found the drivers of the vehicles still trapped in their vehicles’ twisted frames. The roadway was littered with accident debris, with the vehicles about 200 metres apart.

While firemen used the Jaws of life to free the injured, paramedics clambered into the wreckages to stabilise them. After the firemen managed to remove the roof, paramedics immobilised the female driver in a special harness and placed her on a trauma board before removing her from the vehicle.

After both patients were stabilized, medics transported them to various hospitals.
