Labour of love leads to Christa’s sweet success with koeksisters
She goes through to national round of the Solidarity Helping Hands competition
The eliminating rounds of Solidarity Helping Hand’s competition in KwaZulu-Natal took place in Newcastle on 25 July.
The province’s best koeksisters were baked by Christa Dormehl from Amanzimtoti, and she placed first in the competition.
Aart Verrips from Durban was second, followed by Elizabeth Wilken from Richard’s Bay in the third place. The koeksisters were adjudicated by Judy Kruger of the Women’s Agricultural Union (VLU).
Dormehl regularly bakes koeksisters for the home industry, schools and church bazaars. “As a young bride I received the recipe from my mother-in-law,” she said. “It has been handed down from generation to generation and is kept secret. The koeksisters are made with love and are accepted with love. We call them ‘make-up treats’.”
To prove that her koeksister recipe is the best in the country, Dormehl will compete against the eight other regional winners on 26 September. The winning recipe will be worked into a job creation project in Pretoria West, where the koeksisters will be baked in bulk.
