Pensioner issues computer scam alert

Warns the public to be vigilant.

A TOTI pensioner warns the community to be alert, as a computer scam is currently on the go.

The man who does wish to be named, fell victim to the unscrupulous fraudsters earlier this week.

“I received a call from a man claiming to be from Microsoft. He claimed the security on my computer had expired, but if I paid R40 the licence would be extended for another three years.”

The caller had an accent and having acquired access to the computer, he locked it. The pensioner was effectively barred from using his computer.

Concerned that the fraudster would be able to access his bank account, he quickly called his bank for help. However, unable to get assistance over the phone, he drove to the bank. An employee told him to put in a complaint.

While he has been able to make withdrawals from his account since the incident, he is still concerned. He has sent in the computer to experts, who told him about the scam. “They could have put out a warning to the public”. He advises people to be vigilant.
