MEMBERS of eThekwini Outer South crime intelligence and the Cavendish mobile team recovered four illegal firearms in KwaMakhutha and surrounding areas in the early hours of Wednesday morning, 30 September.
Three people aged between 18 and 40-years-old were arrested.
“The operation started in KwaMakhutha, members acted on information sourced by crime intelligence, searched a house and recovered a 9mm Star pistol with three live rounds. When the firearm was circulated it was discovered it had been taken during a business robbery in KwaMakhutha. A 40-year-old man was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” said provincial police spokesman, Maj Thulani Zwane.
“In Illovu, the team arrested a 27-year-old man in possession of a shotgun with 86 live rounds, a 303 rifle and two air rifles. Some 138 live rounds of a R1 rifle were also recovered. An 18-year-old man was arrested in Felikise in possession of a 9mm pistol. The firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain if they were used in the commission of crime.”
KZN police commissioner, Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the police on the arrests and the recovery of firearms. “I encourage the community to continue proving information to police that will lead to the recovery of illegal firearms and ammunition,” she said.
