Robbers bomb safe, ATMs

Two incidents occurred within three days.

BRAZEN robbers blew up a safe at a business in Uitsig Road, Kingsburgh and struck again at a second business in Winklespruit, where they bombed two mobile ATMs.

On Saturday, 2 January at about 1.25am, robbers hit Mnandi Meats Butchery in Uitsig Road and stole R200,000 cash.

“The complainant receive a call that the panic alarm had gone off at the premises. On his arrival, he noticed a black BMW and VW Polo parked in front of the entrance of the butchery facing the R603. As he approached, the occupants started firing at him. He returned fire and both vehicles fled the scene. The number of suspects are unknown at this stage,” said Toti SAPS communications officer, Capt Charlene van der Spuy.

“On further inspection he discovered the glass door was smashed to gain entrance and the safe inside the premises bombed. Five R5 rifle cartridges and a fuse were recovered from the scene. The complainant sustained no injuries.”

Three days later, on Monday, 4 January at about 2am, eight men wearing balaclavas struck at DSM Mall in Winklespruit.

“They arrived in two vehicles, red VW Polo Vivo and a blue Toyota Corolla. They held-up the security guard with rifles, entered the building and blew up two mobile ATMs. Remnants of a fuse and a blasting cartridge were recovered at the scene.”

An undisclosed amount of cash was taken. The robbers fled in the direction of the N2 highway.

Both cases are being investigated by Toti SAPS.
