Fishing rods, whoonga netted

Two alleged housebreakers were apprehended after they attempted to break into a Whitfield Drive home

Fishing rods were recovered in Warner Beach on Friday morning, 1 April by the Community Crime Prevention Organisation (CCPO) and handed over to the police.

“Two men were spotted carrying deep sea fishing rods near Topham Road at about 8am by a resident,” said CCPO committee member, George Snodey.

“After being told by the men they had found the rods in the bushes, the suspected stolen property was handed in at the police station.

The owner spotted the rods on social media and identified them as part of a number of rods stolen off his boat parked in his School Road premises. Three rods are still missing.

Later that morning at about 9.30am, a CCPO reaction officer spotted a man carrying power tools in Ellcock Road. The man admitted he had stolen them from a premises where he worked in the garden.

The owner identified them, but was reluctant to charge the thief, who was released.

On Thursday, 31 March a whoonga dealer was arrested by Snodey, CCPO supervisor Michael Mkhize and a Blue Security response officer in Topham Road in possession of 12 whoonga tablets.

“At about 11am the dealer, who the CCPO had been keeping under observation for a while, finally gave us a chance to tackle him,” said Snodey.

He was spotted walking between Warner Beach and Doonside and was apprehended. The tablets were found stashed in a modified wristwatch.

He was handed over to Toti SAPS.

In a separate combined operation, two alleged housebreakers were apprehended after they attempted to break into a Whitfield Drive home in St Winifreds on Wednesday, 30 March.

Although members of the CCPO, Blue Security, ET Rapid Response, Chubb Security and Metro Police responded within minutes, the culprits had disappeared.

However, a known felon who lives in the area was the number one suspect on their list.

Metro Police dog handler Norman Payne and CCPO operations manager, Leon Joone went to his premises after a CCPO guard posted nearby spotted a man fitting his description going into the yard,” said Snodey.

“After getting the man to come out of the house, they saw he had changed his shirt, but his own family members returned with the shirt he had disposed of.

His accomplice was apprehended near Uitsig Road by a Blue Security officer.”

Both were handed over to Toti SAPS.

This was the second time in a week the same house had been broken into.
